Tue Tinh Duong Free Clinic for Underprivileged People

One early morning, when we visited Tue Tinh Duong Clinic on Phap Luan Pagoda’s ground at No.3 Le Quy Don in Hue City , we saw the Venerable Thich Tue Tam, who is the Abbot of Phap Luan Pagoda and Executive Director of the Clinic, in a yellow smock carefully checking the pulse of every patient.

In an atmosphere overwhelmed with faint aroma of medicinal herbs, we had a talk with Abbot Thich Tue Tam and learned that Tue Tinh Duong Clinic was established in 1982 under the management of Thua Thien-Hue Province ’s Buddhist Shangha. With many effective activities, it has now become a famous address for examining and treating diseases affecting poor people.

The Clinic’s physicians give health examinations free of charge

 to poor people in Phu Xuan Commune, Phu Vang District.

The uniqueness of treatment methods in Tue Tinh Duong Clinic is the combination of oriental and western medicines. However, using traditional medicines in treatment is still given priority at the Clinic. Therefore, physicians here have spent a long time researching and making up many precious remedies for many serious diseases, including degeneration of the backbone, degeneration of the joint, nephrolithiasis, high blood pressure, non-fertility, nervous disease, oedema, etc. They also apply traditional methods, such as acupuncture, physical therapy, vegetarianism, nurturing vitality and harmonizing the mind.

Thanks to its effective treatment methods, the Clinic has become famous both domestically and internationally. It attracts not only patients from provinces in the country but also other countries, such as Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, the US, France , etc.

Most of these patients suffer diseases related to the bones and joints, blood pressure, cardiovascular, digestion, nervous diseases and insomnia which are caused by old age.

With a motto “Dharma can’t separate from the life”, over the past 15 years, Tue Tinh Duong Clinic has treated millions of domestic and foreign patients thanks to money and other support from benefactors. Not only treating patients, the physicians in Tue Tinh Duong Clinic have coordinated with Hue catholic followers to organize many social activities of great significance, such as giving health examinations to people in remote areas and establishing a volunteer group called “Friends” to help HIV/AIDS infected people.

Vietnamese people have a saying “Building nine towers is not as good as saving one person”. That’s why since 2004 when relocating the Clinic from Dieu De Pagoda to Phap Luan Pagoda, the Venerable Thich Tue Tam decided to build a more modern facility to serve patients instead of building a new pagoda.

Leaving Tue Tinh Duong Clinic, we understood the great gratitude of patients to the Venerable Thich Tue Tam and the Clinic’s physicians who have dedicated their life to the noble mission.
